We have lived here 5 years now..............

We have lived here for 5 years now, and visit McGraths at least once a month. One of my favorites are the pan fried oysters. They are always cooked to perfection! The red potatoes and vegetables are a delightful addition to the meal. Not to mention starting the meal with the difficult choice of a beautiful fresh garden salad (you can make it a mini-shrimp louie for an extra $1.99) or a cup of their creamy aromatic clam chowder (there are 2 kinds to choose from: red or white). And can’t forget the bottomless basket of fresh, warm sourdough bread !
A few other family favorites include the alfredo with shrimp………a wonderful creamy concoction, that has been perfect every time, the opened faced crab sanwich, that is good for either lunch or dinner, and last but not least the rib steak you can just about cut with a fork!! Oh, one last thing, the steak and lobster and king crab legs………all I can say about those are: they are definitely worth “writing home about” !
Last, but not least, the staff: never anything but EXCELLENT service, always a smile and well worth a 20+ % tip. They really deserve it.
We give McGraths a 5++++++

Great Value

I wasn’t expecting great things from McGrath’s Fish House. It’s a chain and I usually try to eat at independent restaurants but I’d read their menu and decided to give them a try.

The restaurant is open and airy, decorated with fishing memorabilia. It isn’t tacky and contributes to a nicer than average ambience. There is a separate bar area and the dining area has a few tables and a lot of comfortable booths. Cloth napkins, sturdy silverware, and nicer than average plates combined to make the dining experience a pleasant one. McGrath’s would be a good place for a date, a casual business meeting, or a night out with the spouse.

As I was there for lunch, I decided to order something off the Value Menu. I wasn’t expecting much, considering how the low the prices were and I picked a basic appetizer and entree to see how they handled the bottom end of the menu. After all, if they can’t get the simple stuff right how can one expect them to do on the pricier items?

Service was cheerful, efficient, and attentive without being pushy.

Stuffed Mushrooms

I ordered an appetizer to start. Although I had many choices I settled on the stuffed mushrooms to see how the quality and quantity compared to the $2.99 price. When the mushrooms came out I was pleased to see five medium sized mushroom caps overstuffed with filling. The presentation was nicely done in a small hot casserole dish and the mushrooms were sitting in herbed butter. The mushrooms were stuffed with a mixture of crab, shrimp, herbs and spices (per the menu) and topped with parmesan cheese. To give an idea of the size, one mushroom, cut in half, was a bite size portion.

The stuffed mushrooms had good flavor and were neither over- or undercooked and had a distinct but not overpowering seafood taste.

For $2.99 this appetizer was a nice surprise. I give it 4 stars because the parmesan topping was a little too much – it competed with, rather than enhanced, the filling.

Halibut and Prawns

Again, another pleasant surprise. I was expecting either a very small portion or a dish lacking in quality. Both assumptions were incorrect.

The menu states that the entree comes with coleslaw and french fries but I had a choice of potatoes several different ways and, as a replacement for the coleslaw, a garden salad.

The salad consisted of shredded carrots and purple cabbage and a slice of tomato and cucumber arranged on a bed of chopped iceberg lettuce accompanied by croutons. The salad dressing was just the right amount although I usually order it on the side. Along with the salad my waitperson, Jamie, brought a small loaf of warm bread and small container of butter.

When my entree arrived I was again pleasantly surprised to see a well filled plate of food with four pieces of halibut and five medium sized shrimp. All appeared to be coated with Panko bread crumbs. The coating was light and crispy and not too oily. The shrimp and fish were cooked to perfection, neither rubbery nor dried out. Both a small container of remoulade and tartar sauce were included. I asked for and received a bottle of malt vinegar as well. I had chosen red potatoes as a side and four of them completed the presentation.

My five star rating reflects both the quantity and quality of the meal including the service, ambience, and value of McGrath’s. I will be back.
